Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technician Apprenticeship

The Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technician Apprenticeship is a Level 3, nationally recognised qualification that equips you with the practical and technical skills to work in a wide range of domestic and commercial settings.
You’ll learn how to plan, install, service, and maintain all aspects of plumbing and heating systems — including emerging green technologies such as heat pumps and water recycling.

✅ What Will You Do as a Plumbing and Heating Technician?
As a Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technician, you’ll be responsible for:
- Planning and preparing plumbing and heating system installations
- Accurately measuring, cutting, bending, and jointing various types of pipes
- Installing and maintaining systems including gas, pumps, radiators, and bathroom fittings
- Working with renewable technologies such as heat pumps and rainwater harvesting
- Ensuring appliances are fitted safely, efficiently, and in line with current regulations
In addition, you’ll gain valuable customer service skills, working in homes, building sites, or commercial premises.
Apprenticeship Details
- Duration: 40 months, plus 3-month End Point Assessment (EPA)
- Location: One-day-per-week delivery at our Plymouth training centre
- Qualification: Level 3 Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technician
- Awarding Body: City & Guilds
- Functional Skills: Both maths and English are required at Level 2 or relevant GSCE results.
Cost & Funding
- Total Cost: £22,000
- Employer Contribution: £1,100 + VAT
Funding Support:
- Employers with fewer than 50 staff hiring apprentices aged 16–21 may receive full government funding
- Employers hiring 16–18-year-olds will also receive a £1,000 government incentive

✅ What You’ll Learn
This apprenticeship provides a broad foundation of plumbing and heating skills, including:
- Health & Safety in gas utilisation
- Above and below ground drainage
- Cold and hot water systems, including cylinders and Legionella prevention
- WRAS and Water Fittings Regulations
- Types of pipework, fittings, and jointing methods
- Installation of radiators and central heating (S plan & Y plan)
- Scientific and combustion principles
- Gas safety, tightness testing, commissioning and decommissioning
- Small commercial gas pipework installation
- Hot water system compliance (building regs)
- Maintenance of gas water heaters and wet central heating
- Rainwater harvesting systems
You’ll also prepare for the End Point Knowledge Test, ensuring you’re fully equipped to qualify.

- On-site Assessor: Visits based on your location
- Progress Reviews: Your site-based portfolio will be reviewed monthly at the training centre
- Portfolio System: Progress is tracked using your paper-based or electronic portfolio
Gateway & End Point Assessment
At the end of your training period, your assessor, employer, and tutor will agree when you’re ready to move into Gateway and complete your End Point Assessment (EPA).
