✅ What Does a Gas Engineering Operative Do?

Gas Engineers are responsible for installing, commissioning, and maintaining gas systems and appliances in homes and businesses. You will:

  • Work with a wide range of gas appliances, from central heating systems to cookers and fires
  • Ensure gas systems are installed safely and comply with current regulations
  • Troubleshoot, test, and repair gas systems and components
  • Maintain customer safety and comfort while on site

This role requires excellent problem-solving, attention to detail, and a commitment to health and safety.

Apprenticeship Overview

  • Duration: 27 months, plus 3-month End Point Assessment (EPA)
  • Qualification: Level 3 Diploma in Gas Engineering (City & Guilds)
  • Delivery: One-day-per-week classroom sessions in Plymouth, or Redruth

Cost & Funding

  • Total Cost: £22,000
  • Employer Contribution: £1,100 + VAT

Funding support available:

  • Employers with fewer than 50 staff hiring apprentices aged 16–21 can receive full government funding
  • Employers hiring apprentices aged 16–18 are eligible for a £1,000 government incentive

Entry Requirements

  • Maths and English at Level 2 or equivalent GCSEs
  • Functional Skills support available if needed
  • City & Guilds registration required for this qualification

✅ What You’ll Learn

You’ll gain both core and optional skills across a wide range of gas systems and appliances. Topics include:

  • Health & Safety in Gas Utilisation
  • Scientific Principles in combustion and gas behaviour
  • Gas Safety and Regulations
  • Installation & Maintenance of Gas Pipework (up to 35mm)
  • Commissioning and Decommissioning of systems
  • Installation and Maintenance of:
    • Cookers, tumble dryers, leisure appliances
    • Water heaters and central heating appliances
    • Gas fires
    • Hot water systems
    • Central heating and plumbing systems
    • Water supply regulations and bylaws

📘 Note: Several units are optional and tailored to your chosen pathway.

Workplace Support & Portfolio

  • Assessor/Trainer: You will be supported by a qualified assessor who visits you in the workplace
  • Tracking: Your progress is tracked through a monthly portfolio review, which must be brought into the centre

Key People Involved

  • Classroom Tutor: A dedicated member of our curriculum team
  • Workplace Assessor: Assigned based on location
  • Gateway Approval: Completed when your employer, tutor, and assessor agree you’re ready for the End Point Assessment

End Point Assessment (EPA)

Once you pass through Gateway, you’ll complete your EPA which may include:

  • Observation of Practice
  • Professional Discussion
  • Knowledge Test

This assessment confirms your readiness to work as a fully qualified Gas Engineer.
