We are proud to share that Sam Young, a 3rd Year Electrical Apprentice, has been nominated for the Building Plymouth Apprenticeship Awards. The awards take place on Wednesday 11th February.
Sam is completing his electrical apprenticeship with MEC Mechanical Electrical Contracting. He works on commercial and industrial electrical projects and enjoys the hands-on nature of the role. Sam says he feels well supported by his employer and the training he receives.
Sam always knew he wanted a career in a trade. Sitting behind a desk was never for him. After leaving school, he started his apprenticeship at just 17 years old and began building his skills in the electrical industry.
Looking back, Sam shared the advice he would give himself on his first day:
“Don’t be so nervous — it all works out if you work at it.”
Being nominated for the Building Plymouth Apprenticeship Awards is a great achievement. It reflects Sam’s hard work, commitment, and positive attitude. We are very proud of his progress and wish him the best of luck at the awards.
Support from Sam’s Employer
At MEC Mechanical Electrical Contracting, developing young talent is central to the company’s values. The business has taken on an apprentice intake every year since it was founded. This approach supports both the needs of the business today and long-term succession planning for the future.
All members of the MEC management team started their own careers as apprentices. The company now aims to develop today’s apprentices into the engineers and managers of tomorrow.
Sam was nominated for the award due to his continued dedication and professionalism throughout his training. He is always keen to learn while on site and has worked on a wide range of projects across the MOD, NHS, and utility sectors. This experience has given Sam strong foundations as he moves into the next stage of his career.
The only downside to having Sam work for MEC, is his dedication to cologne! Always putting everyone else to shame, you know when Sam’s in the office as it smells like the perfume counter at a well-known health & beauty store!
